Today's ENT appt was great! Doctor said his ears look like a million bucks, and his nose and sinuses are completely clear. She was hopeful that we are off to a great start and hopefully he won't be as sick this winter. She was proud of him for doing his own therapies and saline rinses and said she does not need to see him for 6 months!

Today was a great clinic appointment! Philip gained 2 pounds and 1.5 inches. He blew 115% on pfts! The RT came in to see his ElectroFlo and was very impressed with the percussor. Philip even said "Ahh" for the throat culture. Dr Schmidt commented that he could not believe we had gone three months without having to be seen. I got to meet one of the new pulmonolgists and briefly talk about the family education day we are doing together. All in all a really good visit!!!
7/24/13- ENT
Today was an already scheduled ENT visit. Monday night Philip had a fever and this morning he had a random dry cough. At the office, his ears were clear and only mild congestion in his nose. I told Dr Dodson that he cultured h.para a couple of weeks ago and that he normally cultures that when he is sick. Because he had a fever earlier and a little congestion, we decided to go ahead and start Omnicef to head this off. Good thing we did. By the time we got to the other end of the hospital to deliver Alyssa's gift bag to Chrissi, he was coughing so hard, he almost vomited. That night, I had to carry him inside. The cough turned wet and nonstop. As of today, (7-29), we have added Mucinex and Afrin to clear him out.

This was Philip's yearly visit and it went really well! They did a throat culture first. then, off to PFTs. He used proper technique again and achieved 107%! That is awesome for a four year old. We talked to Dr Schmidt at length about new things we are doing. We have added OPC-3 and Activated B complex and he appears to be keeping healthy. The biggest addition has been the aloe. Within one week of starting, he has developed an appetite that he has NEVER had before. We are all intrigued and very excited. His BMI % went from 65.4-74.3 in less than 2 months!!! His ideal body weight is now at 105% of expected. Nutrition never even came in the room! Next we went up to take radiographs. The report is not final, but Dr Schmidt thinks they look great. After that we went to the Children''s Hospital for bloodwork. Never fun, but we should have results on that and the throat culture soon. All in all a very nice visit.

ENT visit went better than expected. His current ear infection is clear and his adenoids look good. No surgery needed (although the NP was trying to convince me again!). He does have laryngitis which came out of no where but she thinks it is a virus. We will return in 2 months.

ENT visit went well. Apparently he had fluid in his ear at clinic last Wednesday but it is gone now. Dr D did nasal endoscopy again. No polyps, sinuses look clear. Adenoids however, are enlarged and trapping mucus. She cultured the mucus. She gave me the option of surgery and told me it was completely my decision to wait it out if I want. We decided to go on our vacation and he will come back in a month to recheck. Hopefully everything will be normal. She did say that if she did the adenoids, the sinuses and the ears as of right now would not be necessary! So glad I went with my gut on that and did not do the surgery! *Update 4/19/13- so far the culture is clean. She is extending the antibiotics to a 30 day round to be safe.

Today clinic was weird. Philip has a wet cough. Dr Schmidt said his lower right lobe sounded junky. His PFTs were 98% (from 112% in December). His weight was 36.8# and height was 40.01". He cultured 4 bugs and one was new, so we are putting him on a 21 day round of Bactrim.

Today was Philip's first hospital admission. He got the norovirus yesterday and got dehydrated. Dr S sent him to the ER and he was admitted to PICU until March 14. *While this admission is NOT a CF exacerbation, the call for admission was due to the fact that CF can cause a serious, deadly electrolyte imbalance in a case like this. (His brothers were also treated in the ER for the virus). I actually pushed for this admission (with the help of Dr. S) because of the clear need for continuous IVs. The ER doc was not interested in admission until the CF DR became involved.

Today was Philip's follow up appt at the ENT. Today he was very moody and coughed a few times. I told them I think something is brewing. Turns out, he has a lot of pus behing his eardrum and the vessels are bulging. Not good after being on nonstop antibiotics. Dr Dodson is changing him to high dose Augmentin. We go back in two weeks. If he is not better, she wants to place tubes, remove adenoids, and open his maxillary sinuses!

Today was Philip's follow up with the ENT. She was happy with his progress. No signs of infection, inflammation, or problems. We will continue the alternative sinus rinses indefinitely. She will see Philip again in 6 weeks (or earlier if necessary) to see how he is after the antibiotics are out of his system.
